Writing AS400 Querys

When you write a Query on the AS400 it may be worth bearing in mind the following tips

  • Keep it simple to start with  – start with just two files, get the joins right (type 1 is best to start with)
  • In your record selection keep it tight, for example select just a narrow criteria eg all records in May 2008 or parts in class AB
  • Make regluar use of F5 to ensure you are on the right lines
  • If you send your queery output to a printer which is ‘active’ then ensure the print is held
  • Nowadays its common practice to send the output to an As400 for download to Excel or Access
